2012 Academy Award Nominations: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

Here’s what I think about all the Oscar nominations. And now that I’ve finally seen The Artist, the film is most definitely going to win!

Oscarpalooza

John Lai, the editor of Social Media NZ asked me to write about this year’s Oscars from a social media perspective. Immediately after the ceremony, I wrote a 1000-word essay on how the Oscars failed spectacularly.

After what is being described as the most embarrassing awards show ever, I truly believe that years from now people will STILL refer to The Social Network as The Film That Should’ve Won.

John and his editing staff later transformed my 1000-word vomit into three digestible articles. I’ve posted links to all three articles here. If you could post a comment on whichever you find the most interesting, I would sincerely appreciate it.

  • How the Oscars Tried to Win Over Youth, but Ultimately Failed
  •  In an attempt to appeal to a younger audience, The Academy looked to digital technology and social media to rejuvenate their tired image, but ultimately failed.
  • The King’s Speech wins, The Social Network loses The perfect opportunity to be ‘down with the cool kids’ was sorely missed when The Academy awarded their top prize to The King’s Speech over The Social Network, the most important film in a generation.
  • Oscar Host James Franco Tweets, So Do We Although James Franco tweeted the Oscars better than he hosted them, if it were not for the Twitterverse’s acerbic tweets, the award show itself would’ve been a complete dud.

Golden Globe Noms. Om nom nom nom.

The Golden Globe nominations is further proof that The King’s Speech is leading the awards race with seven nominations while The Social Network and The Fighter tied for the runner up spot with six nominations.

Black Swan exceeded expectations. 127 Hours on the other hand underperformed being locked out of the Best Director and Best Picture categories. You can expect The Kids Are Alright to grab the gold when its strongest competition comes in the form of the gaudy musical Burlesque, which by the way, we have to thank for injecting some life into the laughably bad Best Picture: Musical or Comedy category.

When I discovered that The Tourist is nominated for Best Picture: Musical or Comedy, my forehead was sufficiently slapped. The thought of a film with a 20% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes being considered (let alone nominated) for a ‘best’ anything is eye roll, head slap, moronic.

The Golden Globes did nothing to help Lesley Manville. Many thought her performance in Another Year would need recognition to launch her into Oscar orbit. More deserving character actors are often turned over to make room for Hollywood stars to walk the red carpet.

My Wendy-Petrie-fist-pump moment came when I discovered that Emma Stone had earned a nomination for her performance in Easy A. Charming, magnetic and infinitely watchable. The young actress, destined for super stardom, has created memorable characters no matter the size of the role.

Zero nominations for True Grit.

If you’re interested in reading stellar analysis of the Golden Globe nominations, far better than anything I could ever write, look no further than Guy Lodge’s commentary at In Contention and Anne Thompson’s commentary at Thompson on Hollywood.
